Coaching for Coaches day
Exmouth Community College, Exmouth
Sept 17th 2006

This years Coaching for Coaches day, held at the Exmouth Community, was I feel a success, which has been backed up since with some favourable comments. This was our first year in the new venue, which proved to be absolutely ideal, and our thanks go to Dave Allan for arranging this venue and the catering facility which was available all day.

I was personally very pleased with the attendance from our Western Area Coaches, we had in excess of 90 present on the day, which was enough to draw a comment from head office when they came to load all the names on to the Coaching revalidation database. We apparently had more attend our seminar than the recent Technical conference.

The content for the day was hopefully varied and interesting enough to provide a day which was both educational and informative for our Coaches. Roy Inman delivered his usual, technically spot on session, with this year’s theme being the new Technical Dan Grade syllabus. Brad Salter and Richard Neale, who gave excellent demonstrations of the chosen techniques, assisted Roy. Danny Da-Costa who gave us a humorous and useful session on grip breaking techniques followed Roy. It was good to see Danny looking so well and as enthusiastic as ever.

The afternoon session commenced with a presentation by Matt Norris from Grenville College, of the proposed new Western Area Website. This is something we have talked about in the West for some considerable time, but Matt, obviously with lots of hard work, assisted by John Davies, also of Grenville College, has turned the concept into a reality. The day concluded with Barry Edwards from Bath University, who has worked with Judo Players, including Kate Howey, giving us a session on Core Stability related to Judo. The session consisted of both explanations and a chance to try out some of the associated exercises for Coaches to take away, and hopefully introduce to their own Players.

BJA National Technical Conference
Loughborough University
Sept 2/3rd 2006

The Western Area was well represented at the above conference which was aimed at Coaches and Referees. As well as myself and three other Coaches from my Club, our Area Chairman Dave Allen, Director of Examiners and Referees Alan Kimber, along with Mike Guateri, John Maslin, and Roger Downes were all present. Don’t think I missed anyone there, but apologies if I have.

I think it would be true to say that the main theme of the conference, was the introduction of the Long Term Development Plan concept into Judo. This was linked to our current competition and Grading structure for Juniors, all geared to measuring success by Medals won in competition, and competitive success in Gradings. Link this to the fact that over 75% of our membership are under 16 years of age, that we have a real “drop out rate” problem in this same area, referred to as the revolving door factor, 8,000 in/out, and that equals a problem which we must address if our sport is to grow both from a membership and International success point of view. Without going into too much detail here, we were asked to consider things such as: more age banded Championships, a non-competitive grading pathway, and the introduction of the Long Term Development Plan concept into our Junior Judo Coaching Programme, by basically matching childrens abilities to better comprehend our Sport and its demands, and most importantly, making it fun. We talked about children over competing, being Coached in and using Senior Judo techniques, and progress being recognised totally through competition. We had speakers from France, Germany and Russia, comparing their systems, membership numbers, and subsequent competitive success rates with ours, and it all made for a sobering, thought provoking assessment of how we do things, and where we stand to-day.

There was also an update from Dave Duffy on the UKCC and CPD (Career Professional Development) and how we need to continue to develop our Coaching skills to incorporate some of the step changes described above.

As I say, this was a two day event, and so much was covered and discussed, and I could not possibly do anything other than try and give you a brief overview here. However I will in the future be involved in the organising of Area workshops designed to give you the kind of presentation and ideas given to ourselves over the two day’s.
